Who we are
The Oakleigh & District Historical Society Inc. is an active group dedicated to fostering an interest in the heritage of the district of Oakleigh, Victoria. The Society pursues the recording, preservation and publication of the history of Oakleigh and surrounds.
Founded in 1981 the Oakleigh & District Historical Society is located in the Monash Federation Centre, 3 Atherton Road, Oakleigh in part of a former post office building dating from 1924.
The Centre is a dedicated local history outlet in the City of Monash, offering changing exhibitions, an archive, reference collections, for-sale publications, brochures, postcards, and a research service.
The Society is affiliated with the Royal Historical Society of Victoria Inc. and is a member of the Association of Eastern Historical Societies Inc.
What we offer
Oakleigh & District Historical Society Inc maintains a local history collection relevant to Oakleigh, Hughesdale, East Oakleigh and Clayton.
The Society's archive contains photographs, cemetery records, some civic, club and school records, manuscripts, maps, ephemera, and family histories.
The Society's collection may be viewed by appointment, during opening hours of the Monash Federation Centre, 3 Atherton Road, Oakleigh which are 10.00 am to 5.00 pm Tuesdays & Thursdays.Closed public holidays.
Services include the provision of information on local history, the former Oakleigh General Cemetery and some family history. A fee for research may apply as well as copying charges. Rates will be advised at the time of application. Please note that because of the large number of inquiries received by mail, email, phone and visits to the centre, responses may be delayed.
Help us preserve Oakleigh's unique history. New members are welcome. Meetings and seminars are held at the Monash Federation Centre, 3 Atherton Road, Oakleigh. An annual program is published in the Society's quarterly On Broadway newsletter.
Oakleigh & District Historical Society Inc collects and promotes local history through Cemetery tours, exhibitions, seminars, its newsletter and local history publications, and by participation in events such as Oakleigh Community Festival.
Membership fees for 2016 are $20.00 per year.
Donated items of relevant papers, books, photographs and objects etc are always welcome. Collection can sometimes be arranged.
